The story of Katogi Averoff begins in the late 1950s, when Evangelos Averoff planted the first Cabernet Sauvignon vines in Greece on the steep slopes of Mount Pindos. The privately-owned vineyards at Giniets are the most mountainous vineyards in Greece, at an altitude of 1100 metres.
The varieties cultivated in the 12 hectares of privately-owned and cooperating vineyards are: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Traminer, Vlachiko, Xinomavro and Debina. The winery was constructed in 1973 and, after a succession of extensions and renovations, it now has a production capacity of 1,000,000 bottles. More than 1200 oak barrels are housed in the cellars, and a trip around the winery is a unique journey into the production of wine.
The company produces 14 labels and exports wine to eleven countries.
